GENEVA, OH – May 17, 2019 – On the heels of SPIRE Basketball’s well-documented and successful high school and post-graduate seasons, SPIRE has hired two nationally known basketball coaches to the SPIRE Senior Team. SPIRE is proud to announce the addition of Gravelle Craig and Dawud Abdur-Rahkman. As SPIRE Academy continues to grow in both recognition and size, it will always be seeking out the best and brightest talent to provide our athletes with not only the best facilities in the world, but also the best coaching in the world to provide the most comprehensive training available to assist athletes with achieving and exceeding their goals.
Gravelle Craig - Coach Craig brings in over 18 years Division I coaching experience including six as a Head Coach. He most recently was an assistant coach at Stetson University. Prior to Stetson, Craig spent seven seasons as an Assistant (2004-2011) and six as a Head Coach (2011-2017) at Bethune Cookman University. While Head Coach, Craig guided Bethune Cookman to their first ever appearance in the MEAC conference tournament championship game. He also led the school to the second most wins in school history and was part of the school’s first ever regular season conference championship and post season appearance (NIT). Before Bethune Cookman, Craig helped Chicago State record their most wins since becoming a Division I member. Craig also helped Morris Brown College transition to the Division I ranks in 2001-03. As a player at nearby Cleveland State University, Craig led Cleveland State to the Conference Championship in his Senior season when he averaged 15.0 pts and 6.0 assists per game, and was voted First team All- Conference and honorable mention All American. His 14 assists vs Akron still stand as a conference tournament record.
Dawud Abdur-Rahkman - Coach Dawud Abdur-Rahkman brings 25 years of coaching experience to SPIRE Institute. Including five years as an Assistant Coach at the NCAA D1 level, four Years as a Head Coach at the Junior College level, and four years as an Assistant Coach at the NCAA D3 level. Coach Dawud Abdur-Rahkman’s coaching philosophy and love for developing basketball players began at the youth recreation and AAU level in Allentown, Pennsylvania. For more than eight years Coach Dawud developed countless NCAA D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and Junior College high school prospects. Those high school prospects hailed from in and around Northeastern Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Chester, South Jersey, and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Coach Dawud Abdur-Rahkman has developed four high school Pennsylvania State basketball 2,000-point career scorers. One of these players was his youngest son Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman who was also a 1,000-point scorer at the University of Michigan. Coach Dawud’s oldest son, Shahad Abdur-Rahkman is a college basketball 1,000-point scorer as well at D2 East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.
