When Anjali Mead decided to enroll at SPIRE Institute & Academy (IA) in the fall of 2020, she couldn’t wait to work with her new coach and former Olympic gold medalist, Tim Mack. In fact, the opportunity to work under Coach Mack was what drew her to SPIRE initially. Her parents were excited about her athletic development, but equally happy to find an athletic sports academy that provided a rigorous college-preparedness curriculum alongside performance and personal training and a career development team.
After enrolling at another sports academy in Florida, Anjali was frustrated with her lack of progress and wasn’t seeing the results that she wanted. It was clear that a change in direction and a fresh start was needed.
For Anjali, SPIRE lived up to, and exceeded, her expectations. Her first interaction with Coach Mack was in a pole vault camp, where she improved her performance in only a few days. From there, it was inevitable that she would enroll at SPIRE full-time.
Once at SPIRE, Anjali’s academic and athletic studies came together. “It felt great to know I was on the right track, and that if I worked hard and listened to Coach Mack, Director of Performance John Wallace and the rest of my team, I could reach my goals.”
And recently, those goals came one step closer for Anjali when she committed to High Point University in North Carolina, where she will be continuing her pole vault career with the Panthers. While at High Point, she will have the opportunity to work with Assistant Coach Scott Houston, who has led the program to eight Big South pole vault titles since joining the university in 2015, with four championships coming in the 2018-19 seasons. For Anjali, the future couldn’t be brighter.
Anjali is excited to be joining High Point, and Coach Mack thinks it is an honor she truly deserves. “I am really happy for Anjali signing with High Point,” Coach Mack explains. “This is a tribute to her working extremely hard, being very driven, super focused, talented and also a great student. It is not surprising that she went from jumping 10′ to 13′ in just six months! This does not happen by accident. I am excited to see her continue her success at High Point.”
SPIRE’s College Planning and Placement process begins the moment a student joins the Academy, and keeps working throughout the student’s four years of enrollment to ensure they are well equipped and eligible for college.
